Teaching and the Sea

Thoughts for the upcoming school year:

A sailor plods along the narrow streets of his city.
Glad to be home on leave and yet something is alack.
The salty air. the gulls. fog of morning. the sun upon his back.

She, the sea, calls him.

Though life ashore is pleasant with dear loved ones close,
something is always amiss without the kiss of spray upon his appled cheek.

He is in love with the sea, though he know not how.

The teacher plods along the grocery aisle,
glad for summer and yet something invisible calls.
The salty sweat of youth. the parents. squeals in the halls.

Shiny youthful faces call her.

Though summer life is pleasant with dear loved ones close,
teaching is sprayed softly like graffiti on her appled heart.

She is in love with teaching, though she know not how.

Inspiration for the school year:

If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten.

The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

The 2008-2009 school year starts on Tuesday for me. Joseph will start his freshman year of college, Rachael will start her junior year, Daniel will start his 8th grade year, and Aaron will start 3rd grade. May all our years be filled with laughter and learning.

Good luck to you and all your kids with the new year. I for one am supremely excited that this is my last semester of college for at least a couple of years!

What a lovely poem (?) and sentiment. I know several teachers and while they enjoy their time off, they really can't wait to get back in the classroom.

Love the new hair color. Very soft. I wonder if I should do something like that? My hair has gone quite dark in the last couple of years. A big change from the honey blonde I've been most of my life (no, I've never colored my hair except red once on a dare - and it was a temporary rinse - out again in a week).

Teachers from the past definitely touched my life.

Back then teachers were permitted to teach their values to their students.

Such teaching simply backed up the values we were taught by our parents. Knowing where limits existed made life less confusing.

Teachers today have restrictions that once upon a time never existed.

Hopefully, one day our current school kids will look back thankfully to their respective teachers.
