Car Situation Update

Well, a decision of sorts has been made. Steven made some calls and it turns out that the new Hondas don't come out until September. At that point, particularly at the end of the month, the 2008 Honda vans will drop in price.

I have decided to repair the air conditioning in the Taurus (which will help when I trade it in) and wait to get a new 2008 in September. But I can't just drive around in the Taurus without air conditioning. There's something in there that threatens to come loose and I could risk doing serious damage to the engine if I just "do without", which is what I really wanted to do financial-wise, even if it IS miserable in the car without air conditioning.

So, I took the car to the Ford dealership this afternoon and dropped it off. I have known the guy who runs the service department since high school and he always gives me his discount on all repairs as well as gets me a rental car for free. They will do a complete diagnostic on the car, tune it up, change the oil, and fix the air conditioning.

I am still very seriously looking into trading in the car for a 2008 in September.

At least I won't roast in traffic anymore.

But no pretty new van either (sniff).

BONUS: They did not have any mid-size cars in today at Enterprise, so I am tooling around town in a big beautiful red F-150 pickup truck. Yeah, it's tough but I'm making the best of it. (grin)

I'm glad you got your car problem "solved" in the short term. Our jeep died the last trip back to VA and we had to desert it at the school where Ed was teaching. Still haven't decided what to do with it.

You should be so proud of the kids -- they are growing up so well. Give me a call sometime. I have a new phone number here so I'll need to get it to you somehow.

I don't envy your situation here. There's no "easy" way out. Me? I'd try to avoid having to roll over an existing loan into a new one. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

The AC in my Grand Am was $1,000 to replace. So you got a great deal.

As I replace the big items, such as a radiator, it means years of service from that before further worry over service on it.

What you save with better fuel economy might get eaten up by more insurance and loan payback costs.

If breakdowns are forever happening, getting a problem-free vehicle is good.

Wishing you the best of luck on this.
