Branching Out....

I recently shocked my teenagers by purchasing a CD that was NOT sold in the country section of the music department. I bought this album - two lights by "Five for Fighting". I didn't know much about this guy except that every time one of the kids had control of the radio in the car and one of his songs came on, I liked it. Here's what Wikipedia had to say about "Five for Fighting":
Five for Fighting is the stage name of American singer-songwriter John Ondrasik. His 2000 album America Town went platinum in the U.S. largely due to the success of the song "Superman (It's Not Easy)" in late 2001. The 2004 album The Battle for Everything has also enjoyed chart success in the United States. Ondrasik has also released a DualDisc of his 2004 album which has one side containing The Battle for Everything in its entirety and the other side being a DVD containing bonus footage and the "100 Years" music video. Five for Fighting's fourth album, Two Lights, was released on August 1, 2006.

If you have a chance, give it a listen. The first 5 songs are the best.

And then, of course, I HAD to pick up the latest of my country faves. Yes, this kid is young and he's trying way too hard to look cool, with the jewelry and all, but he's good. He was the opening act to a concert I went to last year and he can really put on a show. I like him because he's way on the rock side of country. His latest hit, Johnny Cash, could easily play on a rock station and not stand out as a country song.

Finally, we have my totally favorite group, Rascal Flatts. I have been to THREE (count 'em) Rascal Flatts concerts and they were all great. They are the opening concert of the Kentucky State Fair this year in August, but alas, I did not get tickets this time when they went on sale last Saturday. They are, unfortunately, $60 a piece, and my financial priorities do not currently allow for such luxuries. But they're still cute, and they have a new album coming out in September, so I guess I'll just have to wait.

I've also been listening to Sheryl Crow and Norah Jones lately, just so you all know I'm not permanently stuck on the country stations.
Who are your favorites lately?
J.

PS. First day of summer school went well. I think it will be an easy 3 weeks. (smile)

Ok, I'm a Nora Jones fan too. See, we can find some musical common ground here. I refuse to listen to Rascal Flats though.

I don't know who Jason Aldean is, but I'm going to go ahead and hate him too. LOL ;-)

Hey J, I checked out Five for Fighting on the iTunes Music Store. I like his soft rock style. I think you made a good choice in your purchase.

I live Five for Fighting, Norah Jones and Sheryl Crow. I don't do country so I can't ever see me downloading a Rascal Flatt's song at iTunes. ;-)

I like the new Maroon 5 album, but I listen to a wide variety of music-- mostly not new stuff.

I've heard some Five for Fighting songs on the radio. It's not bad at all.

I do like that "Johnny Cash" song. I had no idea who sang it, so I will definitely check that guy out.

Norah Jones is one of my favorites. I've also been listening a lot lately to the latest Breaking Benjamin album - and some old KISS.

Now you've gone and done it. It's always risky bringing up music while I'm in (virtual) earshot. Lately I've mostly been listening to (in no particular order):
David Bowie,
The Highwaymen,
Beth Orton,
Everything But the Girl,
Cream,
Frank Zappa,
Rory Gallagher,
Pink Floyd,
Lynyrd Skynyrd,
Dresden Dolls
and Arcade Fire.

Variety is the spice of life and all that. I don't know what's happened to my copy of Narah Jones' latest offering.

You definitely peaked my interest in "Five For Fighting." Downloading one of his tunes even as I type. :-)

Wow! I can't believe I'm familiar with his music, and didn't even know who he was. I grabbed a half dozen of his songs.

I haven't liked much of the music I've heard since 1969. It's a generational thing. :-)
