Oh. My. God.

Aaron just chose Honey Bunches of Oats for breakfast over Fruit Loops**!!!!

Could it be that his tastes have actually.......changed?

I am amazed.

I think I'll go buy a lottery ticket.

Changing tastes plus the desire to eat better? And, don't discount the influence of Mom who is setting the example.

I am always stunned when my son does stuff like that. His preferred snack these days? A Granny Smith apple. Hallelujah!

What on Earth is Aaron thinking?!?!?

I'm grown - and Fruit Loops are STILL my favorite cereal.

Corky - So far it HAS been a very good day. I got to go to football practice with Daniel, took Joseph to work, picked up Rachael from her friend's house, and made a quick run to the grocery. Now I'm at school working on my room. So far, so good.

Sayre - Stunned is a good word for it.

Rick - No brussel sprouts. He's a good kid, not a saint! :)

RWA - I like 'em, too. MY favorite "bad for you" cereal is Count Chocula. Yum! But just between you, me, and the World Wide Web, I threw away the box of Fruit Loops as soon as he left the kitchen. They were probably stale anyway. ;)

J - Substituting healthier foods is not difficult when we like a variety of things. Otherwise it gets tricky.

I have never liked brussel sprouts; yet, I love steamed cabbage (brussel sprouts look like baby cabbages).

I do like broccoli, raw or steamed. Yet the things that I enjoy among the free foods in the veggies list for diabetic meal planning are not that many. So I get bored easily.

As for dry cereal, Cheerios is lowest in carbohydrate. (Special K comes in second.) As well, the lower the carb count in milk, the higher the fat content. I prefer 2% for fat content in milk.

High fructose sweetener and sugar are found as ingredients in far too many food products these days. As the incidence of these ingredients in foods has grown, so have the number of diabetics in our nation increased.

You are doing tremendously well with your dietary changes, and I am inspired to do better by your fine example.

I saw you mentioned Count Chocula to rwa...that's one of my weaknesses where cereal is concerned...it was my all-time favorite growing up, too!

These days I can't even eat Honey Bunches of Oats as it effects my blood sugar something awful. I'm hypoglycemic and it just about puts me into a coma. I like the taste, though, and even my little guy will eat it on occasion (though I'm sure the Fruit Loops would have won out over the Honey Bunches of Oats given the choice!).

Thanks for commenting. If you ever want to know more about Low Carbing, just let me know. I don't even crave the sweet stuff or "bad" stuff anymore. It's not all about just eating meat, either...there are lots of healthy veggies and fruits and whole grains involved. :-)

CJaneWinn says she is hypoglycemic. Do health care providers still consider that to be "pre-diabetic?"

CJaneWinn, do you pay attention to the glycemic index of starchy foods when you do choose them?

Just curious.

Hey, I sent you an email. :-)

brother dave, (okay, that's weird to me, I'll just say, "Uncle David," okay? lol)

Yes, hypoglycemia is a precursor of diabetes, though some erroneously think of it as being the opposite of being diabetic. I have had it for a very long time, and I was borderline gestational diabetic when I was pregnant with Jaden (my youngest child).

I absolutely pay attention to the glycemic index. I also pay attention to how I personally feel when I eat certain things, because I can have low blood sugar reactions to things one would think would be perfectly acceptable and not effect my BG and it ends up having a major effect on me. I am extremely sensitive to carbohydrates. I joke and say I'm "allergic" to them, but it's really not too far from the truth.

My poor kids. My wife only buys Cheerios and Honey Bunches of Oats, so they don't know what they are missing. I mean, Grape Nuts are great when you add a 1/2 cup of sugar to your bowl!

david, you are exactly right about the Grape Nuts!!!
